John played this tune on his “John Kelly Fiddle & Concertina Player” album, Topic Records, 1975, one of three tunes listed as “The Sister Reels“. On the sleeve notes he calls it ‘The Ravelled Hank of Yarn‘ when in fact the correct name is Cal O’Callaghan’s.
Cal, whose full name was Callaghan O’Callaghan (b. 1863) was the uncle of the well-known fiddle player Pádraig O’Keefe from Castleisland, Co. Kerry (1887 – 1963). Cal was from Doonasleen in County Cork. He lived in America for a number of years but returns to Ireland in the 1880s. His sister Margaret married John O’Keefe and their firstborn was Pádraig O’Keefe. Source.
