Scattery Island Slide

John’s grandmother grew up on Scattery Island and he often went over to the island in his younger years. Scattery Island is an island just off the coast of County Clare in the Shannon Estuary. The music here differed to music on the mainland because of the mix of styles of the fishermen and others who would frequent the island. John’s music would be influenced here by people from other counties such as Kerry and also from musicians as far away as Norway.

About

In the sleeve notes of his album “John Kelly Fiddle and Concertina Player”, it states that John got this tune from his mother, Elizabeth Kelly. Who in turn, most likely got from her mother Mary Brennan, who was born and raised on Scattery Island. John often went over to the island in his younger years.
